When I started my business in June 2024, I had no professional business experience beyond the basics of accounting. I didn’t know how to run a business, market my services, price my offerings, or even interact with clients. I didn’t even have professional pet care experience. So how did I grow from zero clients to grossing over $10,000 in 11 months?

The key is to build your business from the ground up as if you’re already making that money. Establish a professional online presence, invest in insurance and proper equipment, and teach yourself the basics of marketing. Make your online presence appear as professional and trustworthy as you know you are. In pet care, trust is everything, and you need to start building it before you even start offering services.

Step 1: Building a Website

When I decided to start a dog walking and pet sitting business, the first thing I did was build a website. In 2025, the digital presence of any business is crucial, especially when you’re just starting out. A polished, professional website helps you look more established and credible to potential clients, regardless of your real-world experience. I consider this step a non-negotiable. Just like a photographer needs a portfolio, you need a professional website to showcase your services and make it easy for potential clients to contact you.

You might be thinking, "But Erin, I don’t know anything about web development or SEO!" Don’t worry, neither did I. There are plenty of free website builders online, like Wix and WordPress, that are user-friendly. However, after trying both, I opted for Hostinger instead.

Hostinger offers a web hosting service with a simple, intuitive website builder. I love their templates and drag-and-drop functionality, which allows you to customize nearly anything. It’s easy to use and also one of the most affordable options. While other platforms like WordPress require additional fees for advanced SEO or e-commerce tools, Hostinger includes them in their base plans.

Regardless of the platform you choose, your website should be the central hub for your services and provide a simple way for clients to reach you.

Step 2: Investing in Insurance

Investing in professional insurance is one of the best ways to boost your credibility. Offering insured and bonded services sends a clear message to potential clients:

  • You’re a legitimate business. Given the choice between two pet sitters — one insured, one not — which would you choose?

  • You’re committed to protecting clients’ pets and property, going the extra mile, even without legal requirements.

Beyond perception, insurance protects you against unexpected situations. It covers liability in case of accidents or injuries while caring for pets and may also cover property damage. I personally use ProFUR, an insurance provider in Ontario that specializes in pet care professionals. It’s a bit pricey, but the peace of mind is well worth it.

Step 3: Acquiring the Right Equipment

Once your website is live and your insurance is in place, it’s time to gather essential equipment. If you already have pets, start by using your own leashes, treats, and bags. If not, consider shopping sales at local pet stores or checking Amazon for deals.

At a minimum, you need a leash, treats, and poop bags. Everything else can be added as you grow. If you have some extra funds, I highly recommend TinyHorse leashes and lines. They’re high quality, made in Canada, and perfect for walking multiple dogs.

Step 4: Marketing Your Services

With the foundation of my business in place, I started researching marketing strategies to connect with potential clients. I noticed that many pet care providers had great success using social media, so I joined several pet-focused Facebook groups in my area and crafted a simple marketing post that went something like:

"Hi everyone, my name is Erin, and I run a pet care business in [My community]- we are accepting new dog walking clients! I have over ten years of experience working with dogs of all sizes and temperaments, and I’m bonded and insured. If you need a dog walker, please reach out!"

I’d also include several photos of myself with my own dogs and a link to my website. Over time, as I gained more experience, the post evolved to include client photos and testimonials, but the core message remained the same - I'm experienced, trustworthy and willing to go the extra mile for my clients.

Step 5: Implementing Everything

With all the groundwork laid, the final step was to implement my plans. From launching my website to promoting my services online, taking action was crucial. Each component — website design, insurance, equipment, and marketing — works together to create a cohesive and credible brand.

By following these steps, you can quickly go from being an unknown in your community to a well-known, highly-rated pet care provider in no time!
